Introducing Anchor’s Zymaster No.1: California Lager
January 25, 2012
California Lager to be the first brew released under the Zymaster Series
On January 23rd, we unveiled the Zymaster Series. Now, we are introducing the first unique brew to be released under the Zymaster Series. As described, it is rooted in its exceptional respect for the ancient art and noble traditions of brewing and features extraordinary ingredients, innovative techniques, and unusual flavors.
Introducing Zymaster No.1: California Lager.
Anchor Steam® Beer’s roots date back to the sundry and mysterious adaptations and improvisations of brewers to the primitive conditions they faced during the California gold rush, long before icehouses and modern refrigeration made traditional lager beer a viable California option. Early efforts notwithstanding, it wasn’t until the winter of 1875/76 that a California brewer was able to create—thanks in part to the ready availability ice in the mountains near Truckee— what might be called the first true California lager. The inaugural brew of the Anchor Brewing Zymaster Series is our attempt to re-create such a beer. Brewed from the finest California barley, Cluster hops—the premier hop variety in 19th–century California—lager yeast, and water, it is, quite simply, re-discovered gold.
The Zymaster Series inaugural brew will be available at special events leading up to and throughout SF Beer Week, February 10th – 19th, and available on draught only in 13.2 gallon and 5.16 gallon kegs. Initial distribution will be focused in California.
